Prison Correspondence Course

The Dharma Teacher Order of the Hai An Pagoda, in partnership with the ChuangYen Buddhist Monastery in New York, has approved the development of a Prison Buddhist Correspondence Course. The need for the course is a result of responses from prisoners who have received Buddhist books and put into practice what they have learned. They found that Buddhism has made a positive impact on their life, and their understanding of how unskillful actions have caused them and others much pain and suffering. As a result, there have been a number of requests from prisoners for a Correspondence Course that would aid them to study and practice Buddhism in a structured way so they could deepen their knowledge of Buddhism.

The goals of the Course are: 1. Familiarize prisoners with: a) Buddhist concepts, theory and practice. b) The major schools of Buddhism and their practices. c) The life of the Buddha. 2. Integrate Buddhism into the lives of prisoners to help them to avoid unskillful states of mind such as anger and hatred and to cultivate skillful states of mind such as equanimity and compassion.
